Yeah, Rick Hurd of the CoCo Times really missed the mark criticizing
Darryl Sutter for not re-upping during the season.

And I don't blame Darryl one bit for not inking that contract
sitting in his in-box immediately after shaking hands with Ken
Hitchcock. I think there are two things he's waiting to see:

    1. Do the Sharks really want him back? A "no" is unlikely, but
it's not as totally absurd as some have suggested. Remember
Al Sims? Dean Lombardi was behind Sims 110% -- until he did
his post-season 1-on-1's with the players. I'm sure Darryl
knows there'll be some substantial griping about him from
the players. But I can't imagine it being enough to change
	Lombardi's mind.

    2. The outcome of team budget meetings, reportedly starting
yesterday (5/10 Wed). Are Gund->Jamison->Lombardi really
serious about spending what it's gonna take?

As for #1, it's just Darryl letting the Sharks achieve informed
consent before he shakes hands on the deal. And for #2, by waiting,
Darryl gets to use a bit of leverage to push the organization in the
right direction.

I suspect that they don't count the Vernon salary paid up to the trade
deadline, or the Craven buyout, or the Rouse buyout.

That takes care of Captain Owen and leaves $2 million for everyone else.

Fortunately I think the raise pool is much larger than that. Add $5 million
from the playoff games, and $x million from departing players.

Well, from what I hear he's taken a job in Anaheim writing for the Quacks.

I got a chance to see the Cup up close and personal at a Hammerheads
post-SharksFest volunteer dinner a couple of years back and took a
long look at it and in particular the name lists for Detroit's last
two cups. I was initially surprised to see female (looking) names
were on the cup.

Well, I counted a total of 7 Illich family names in one of the two
recent Detroit years. Not sure if was '97 or '98 or if roughly the
same Illich list appeared both years (but probably it was '97 since
as I recall Vernon's name was also in the same list). Supposebly
Illich's wife's name and his kids names are on it in addition to
his. Also there's a number of womens' names on it. About 8 or 9,
I was told by the HHOF Cup caretaker who was attached at the hip
with the cup.

Cheers,

p.s. I'm hoping Bourque's name will be engraved for the 2000 list :)

Generally I believe it is determined by the team, they submit a list. For
example, I believe a couple of years ago Wings' owner Mike Illitch had his
kids named engraved on the Cup along with the team, in a move I'm sure those
who fought hard to win the thing must have loved.

They did have everybody but Sundin, who was nonexistant in
the final game.

Heh. Did you even watch the games when Clark was playing? He
created chances, scored a goal, had great rushes, and got a few
standing ovations from the Maple Leaf faithful. A good replacement
for Ant as he showed he still got it in the playoffs.

As for Ant, a team shouldn't rely on him during the playoffs, but
it's nice to have a young player in the lineup. One that didn't play
like a rookie in the second half of the season.

But since this isn't the Leafs list, I'm going to drop things here.
Continue if you feel the need. :)

Obviously for THIS playoff run you would have rather had Tucker. We all
would have.

But time will tell whether or not Tucker will be better long term rather than
Sundstrom. If Sundstrom spends the off season conditioning we'll all see
what we originally traded for last summer.

In the meantime Tucker's season is also done. How much of an impact could he
really have had?

As I've said in other posts, I don't think Owen's raise will be more than $2
million or so. The guy had one really good year and everyone's ready to give
him Kariya money! Brendan Shanahan signs a $6.5 million/year contract and
everyone thinks Nolan deserves more. Well, he won't get it. He's still
restricted. Shanahand would have been unrestricted. That's the difference.

Keep in mind that we've had 3 playoff games the past two seasons. So we added
two more this year. That's not that much more than we already had, but it's
significant. Obviously, I already added up the money for the departing
players, and it is significant. That's why I believe we have enough to afford
at least one solid UFA forward.

Subject: Glossary of Hockey Expressions (from the T.O. Sun)

As posted on the Leafs list:

I recently ran into a visitor to Canada who was unfamiliar with hockey and
thus at a total loss when listening to pre- and post-game interviews with
players and coaches during the Stanley Cup playoffs. It takes years to
understand the code in which hockey players talk to hockey announcers.
For those unfamiliar with the terrain, I thought a glossary of hockey
expressions you might hear on TV interviews would be useful. (With their
real meanings in parentheses.)

"Our backs are to the wall." (We're down two games, so we've pretty well
given up on the series. Nobody seems to care in this hot weather. I've got a
tee-off time booked for tomorrow morning.)

"They're a tough-checking team." (There hasn't been an NHL team this dirty
since Detroit in the mid-'70s. They think skill is a saw. The forwards are
goons and the defencemen are thugs. We'll be happy to get out of this series
with our lives. You couldn't beat these guys with assault rifles.)

"I'm just happy I can contribute." (My teammates have let me down something
awful. I've been carrying these losers all year. Thank heaven I got a couple
of goals in the playoffs and didn't embarrass myself completely. I'll be
looking good come contract time.)

"They're tough at home." (Have you ever been to Philadelphia? Man, that's
one ugly town. Most of the fans are psychopaths. They've got no necks, bad
teeth and voices louder than a fog horn. And that's the women. Philly crowds
are so hostile the WWF rents them intact for special occasions.)

"I love it up here, but I'd like to play for a contending team." (Who needs
this Mickey Mouse country? It's so cold you can actually make ice the
old-fashioned way and the Canadian dollar is a joke. I'm not sure there are
enough loonies in the whole country to cover what I'm going to ask for next
year.)

"He's one of the nicest people ever to play this game. A real gentleman."
(We've been bouncing that wuss around for years. He couldn't lick a postage
stamp. The last time he went into a corner there was a convenience store on
it. He bought a new lipstick.)

"This next game is critical (vital, pivotal, key)." (Unlike the entire
160-game season, which means nothing, this next game could actually have
some bearing on who wins the Stanley Cup. Like, if we lose, it won't be us.
Bummer schedule, eh?)

"This team has class." (Hardly any of the guys hork when the television
cameras are on them. Well, maybe once in a while in the penalty box. Last
year one of our players read a book. Anyway, we seen it in his equipment
bag. If he says he read it, he read it, Mac.)

"This team has character." (Only good Canadian boys need apply. We wouldn't
draft a Swede if he was the last player in the world. We might take a
Russian if he's been arrested at least once for a violent crime. Don
Cherry's so proud he wants to give us all a big kiss. Let's see him try.)

"They play a tight checking style." (These guys have reduced the game of
hockey to a spectator sport - for the players. I've seen more action in a
chess match. And as many shots on goal. One more dump and they'd have to
pump out the septic system.)

"We need to play 60 minutes of hockey." (Unlike the regular season, where
we don't like to muck it up for much more than 10 minutes a game, at $200 a
seat the fans expect more in the playoffs. Two and a half periods flitting
about like Toller Cranston won't cut it.)

"It's crunch time." (The season's been pretty much a lost cause. I've got
maybe two games to show management I can play at this level. If I blow it
now, I'll be smashing heads in upstate New York with a bunch of guys without
a complete set of teeth between them. No decent agent will touch me with a
10-foot pole.)

"They have a highly skilled team." (Lots of European players. Guys who can
skate, pass and shoot the puck. They'll be gone by the first round. This is
playoff hockey. This is about hooking, holding, slashing and tripping. Skill
this!)
