Out of that free agent list that Chuq sent around, I can only see the
following as somewhat helpful to the Sharks without forcing them to give up
any picks (in other words, Type III agents):

Dave Gagner (Calgary)
Brian Skrudland (Florida)
Russ Courtnall (NYR)
Patrick Flatley (NYR)
Doug Lidster (NYR)
Mark Messier (NYR) -- [yeah, right!!]
Michel Petit (Philadelphia)
Sergei Nemchinov (Vancouver)

Out of those, Messier is the best and also the most impossible to get.
Besides him, none would be considered 1st line players but many can still a
lot of quality depth, something the Sharks sorely lacked this season. In
particular, I like Dave Gagner and Patrick Flatley for depth at forward and
some grit. But Nemchonov is probably overall better than the other two as
pure defensive forward that has shown a lot of grit and is top-notch 3rd
line center. Lidster and Petit would be welcomed additions to a limited San
Jose blueline corps. Lidster is also fairly skilled on the offense (Ranger
defenseman usually are) which would help take some pressure off Iafrate
next season.

Of the intriguing but expensive possibilities of the Type II kind:

Sergei Fedorov (Detroit)
Mike Modano (Dallas)

Both are superstars, both are still young, and both will probably never be
let go by their respective clubs. But I'd still like to dream about it,
don't you? :)

I specifically didn't include any Type III goalies (most notably Glen Healy
and Andy Moog) because if Belfour signs, we won't be needing any for a while.

I don't see why -- you should have fewer, because (a) unless the player
is in the small crease, if he's not affecting the goalie the ref
doesn't need to go upstairs, so unless the player's feet are close to
the rectangle (and most of the disputed calls we're arguing over are
right on the edge of the semicircle, so tehy're not), there will be
fewer disputes, not more.

No, we don't. That'd be boring. Let's argue again.

do they? I was under the impression that coaches contracts ended when
the season ended, i.e. in this case when the Ducks were eliminated.

>Also rumored to be a destination for Wilson is Phoenix.

And also Boston now. And Pat Burns has reportedly removed his name from
contention in Montreal, fueling speculation he's cut a deal elsewhere.
Where? Has anyone seen Lombardi recently? (grin)

>My uneducated guess at what went down in Anaheim was perhaps that Wilson

The word down there (we saw part of the press conference) was simple:
personality conflict between Wilson and members of the ducks managment,
especially Presidente Tony Tavares. Ferierra put it fairly bluntly:
"Wilson is a good coach. Wilson is also a good quote. Let's leave it at
that". Quote-unquote.

>Next wild guess on my part - how about the possibility that Sims returns to
>Anaheim as head coach? He supposedly had a wonderful rapport with the
>players. He's had one year of head coaching experience.

Depends on whether the Ducks see what caused his problems here as Sim's
fault or the Sharks' fault. Depends also on whether Sims wants to work
out a deal to get out of his Sharks contract (remember, eh's going to
be paid for the next couple of years by us) to go back to work, or
whether he wants to sit home and relax. My guess: he'll do what
Constantine did and cut a deal if the right situation occurs, but don't
expect him out on the street iwth a "will coach for food" sign any time
soon.

It'll be interesting to see if he DOES step into Anaheim behind the
bench. If he does, it means the ducks feel the problems were Sharks
organization ones, not Sims personality. Keep that in mind as we move
forward...

In the remote event that this hasn't already been posted seven times on
this list...

The so-called Mighty Ducks of Anaheim have fired Ron Wilson, one of the
few bright spots in their organization, for unexplained reasons.

According to Ducks' GM Jack Ferreira, the decision was made due to
"philosophical differences" and not because of money or wins or losses.
When asked if the organization might be viewed critically due to not
rehiring a successful coach, Ferreira reportedly said "No one knew who
Ron Wilson was four years ago, so I'll be judged by the future."

IMHO, them's pretty harsh words for a coach who led his team into the
second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs in only its fourth year of
existence, as well as leading the US National Team to a stunning upset
of the Canadian team in last year's World Cup.

It'll be interesting to see how the real story unfolds, and what were
their real reasons for letting Wilson go. Did he use a stuffed Mickey
souvenir as a voodoo doll? Did he sleep with Eisner's wife? Did he cry
when they shut down the Main Street Eclectical Parade? Whatever the
reasons are, it's a fairly safe bet that they have little to do with
hockey. ;-)

Hmmmm... Wonder if Mr. Wilson would like to stay in California...?

I think you're right, since the free agency rules were negotiated between
the NHL and the NHLPA (Player's Association), to neither of which the
coaches belong to.

ESPN and all of Boston media has answered that question for you. It appears
that Pat Burns will be hired as the next Boston Bruins coach. Announcement
is expected sometime this week. Too bad -- he was the most proven and
experienced head coach available so far...

God -- I can't make a rational decision on this. Who is his conflict
with, other than Tavares? Ferrierra in the press conference had a
really "don't slam the door on your butt on the way out" feel to him,
so I'm guessing, but it seems to be more widespread than just a one on
one fight in the front office, as Muckler/Nolan seemed to be.

But what do the players think? In Anaheim and here? This is one of
those things we as fans simply can't evaluate -- we don't know what the
interviews are like, how the staff reacted, how the players react.

I could, for instance, see us swapping coaches, simply because both
sides are firmly convinced the "personality confict lies in the other
organization, not the guy they're hiring. And you know what? they could
be right on both sides (not likely, but not impossible...).

*shrug*. sometimes we're merely guessing. My leaning is towards Cashman
as the known quantity, and something about the Anaheim situation makes
the alarm bells go off, if only faintly. But then, what do I know? I
had Sims about 180 degrees backwards. But fi the players want Wilson,
go get Wilson. I sure can't judge this one very well...

The problem is that Edmonton traded off Jeff Norton (and Norton's
salary) to be able to throw money at Richardson. I agree with you. So,
evidently, does Glen Sather, so don't expect to get him.

He is probably the better canidate since we know that he is proven, but what
happens if you go for Wilson, don't get him and in the process of going after
Wilson you lose Cashman to another team?

One positive about Wilson, for those of you who don't know him, he has Bill
Walsh as one of his idols as far as buliding an empire for a professional
sports team, has read his book closely and followed it. What else can you
appreciate more in the bay area than that?

a) one who wanks
b) an onanist
c) a tosser
d) all of the above

But seriously, it's British slang that's equivalent to "jerk-off."

No, you're not alone in that, but you don't want to cut half the season just
over the olympics. As a fan I'm definately looking forward to Olympic play
with the NHLers. In my mind Hockey will become one of the forefront sports
in the Winter Olympics, it won't matter whether or not Tanya Harding makes
her return, whacks Nancy Kerrigan in the knee several times right in front of
the cameras followed by Harding looking right in the camera, lead pipe in
hand and saying "yeah, I slammed her in the knee and then I looked at her
knee and wasn't satisfied with the amount of bleeding so I did it again!"

Now that I think of it, it's probably good that we won the World Cup the last
time, otherwise we might see Brett Hull and Adam Deadmarsh running around the
Canada dressing room with dangerous objects in their hand.

The free agent list forwarded by Chuq yesterday didn't include Ville (???):

SAN JOSE SHARKS
Restricted: Wade Flaherty (II); Iain Fraser (II); Greg Hawgood (II); Al
Iafrate (II,V); Vlastimil Kroupa (II); Darrin Madeley (II); Andrei Nazarov
(II); Mike Rathje (II); Chris Tancill (II).
Unrestricted: Ed Belfour (III); Bob Errey (III); Tim Hunter (III); Ronald
Sutter (III).

Granted, you can't force him to play here, but if he's under contract and runs
out on it , could he ever play in the NHL again?

So much for the Montreal trade rumors...
